This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Center for Old Music. We have presented our annual Christmas and Spring programs every year for three decades. This year's programs continue to inspire, uplift, and amuse as we bring back old favorites and spice things up with some twists and treats.

A little history… The very first spring concert presented by the Center for Old Music was in May of 1978 and it featured a small ensemble of eight youngish musicians who had been experimenting with early music for a few years or less. The little group called itself Musica Nova. Their spring program was titled “Court Music of the Late Renaissance” and it featured “voices, viols, flutes & lutes.” Three of those performers can be found on the Center’s 2007-2008 season. The concert 30 years ago was all-secular with selections from England, France & Italy.

The 2008 event will include that and more:

  • Psalm settings by Bach, Schütz and Rossi (the first two sung in German, the last in Hebrew)
  • Virtuosic early Baroque vocal pieces with harpsichord and viol continuo
  • The Medieval band is back with a set of dance music from the 1300s
  • And then our most popular audience favorite for the season: “Sumer is icumen in.” An opportunity for the audience to join in! All you need to know is “Sing cuckoo, lhude sing cuckoo.” (It's a two-part round, but we’ll get everybody started.)

Please come help us celebrate the beginning of our fourth decade!

The Center for Old Music produces concerts by the Lexington early music performing ensemble Musick's Company. The Center also maintains a library of performance scores and parts and has, over the years, produced concerts by other artists and has been active in education activities. We also have a singer/players registry for connecting people in central Kentucky who are interested in playing early music. Our Old Music News newsletter archive will give you a taste of some of our recent activities.
